About Couth

One sentence: Couth (rhymes with truth — the opposite of uncouth) is a free, Duolingo-style trainer for charisma and social skill, with narrated lessons, feedback that never flatters you, and a 30-day ladder of real-world courage missions.

One paragraph: Couth teaches the social skills nobody gets taught — starting conversations without canned lines, listening so people feel heard, flirting without sleaze, holding boundaries warmly — in bite-size lessons that are read aloud in a choice of two warm voices. Every answer gets specific, honest coaching, including why the smooth-sounding option quietly fails, and every lesson ends with a small real-world mission. It's aimed at anyone who feels behind socially — men and women, students and professionals — and it's completely free: no subscription, no ads, no account, and no data collection of any kind.

The full story: Social skill is usually sold two ways: pickup-artist tactics for men, or vague "just be confident" advice for everyone else. Couth's bet is that charisma is a trainable skill like any other — and that the training only works if the app is honest with you. So there is no fake praise anywhere in it. Each of the 144 scenario questions across 12 units gives truthful feedback on every option, and the curriculum runs from first hellos through storytelling, reading rooms, boundaries, and dating — with self-respect, consent, and graceful rejection built into the dating content rather than bolted on.

The app is the gym, but life is the game: every lesson ends with a micro-action to do in the real world, and the 30-day Courage Ladder rebuilds social nerve one small dare at a time — day one is making eye contact and nodding at a stranger. A voice-dictated Field Journal turns daily reports into a progress calendar, processed entirely on-device.

Couth is a solo-built app with an unusually hard privacy line: no account, no analytics, no tracking, no network requests. Everything lives on the phone.

About the developer

James Scanlon is a solo founder in Wilmington, North Carolina, building consumer apps under Stoic Affiliate LLC. He built Couth after a social-skills app he was using broke mid-course and left him stranded — so he decided the replacement should be honest, narrated, private, and free. Couth is his second iOS app, after the health tracker CaltrackIQ.
